New grad starting in OR

Published

I'm a new RN and have accepted a job as a OR nurse. I have been told that I will be expected to do a lot of "homework" once I start. I would like to get a head start, so I was wondering if anyone could recommend any reference materials I could use. Thanks!

Welcome to AN!

The two most common books that will likely be recommended by your department's educators are Alexander's Care of the Patient in Surgery and AORN's Guidelines for Perioperative Practice. Chances are, you will be provided these books as part of the orientation or have them available via the facility's library. Because they are quite expensive, I would not recommend purchasing them ahead of time. Instead, utilize AORN's website and look at some of the free information.

Additionally, head on over to the Operating Room Nursing forum and browse through the threads- I recently posted a thread on tips for new OR nurses that you may find helpful.

Ok, thanks for the info....and yes I'm a huge potter fan!!!!
