New Grad at school in another state

Okay, please redirect me if this has been discussed before. :)

I found out today it is a little complicated to get licensed for the first time in a state other than the one you went to school in. I will graduate May 22 and am supposed to start work June 27.

I have a few questions.

1. Which is the form on the TN BON for new grads first applying for licenses? I looked at several and could not figure it out. I found some for existing RNs wanting to move to TN but not the one for new nurses. Is it online?

2. Is it allowed for unlicensed graduate nurses to work in Tennessee while they wait for board results?

3. This is kind of related to the 2nd question, but how long should it take for me to get my letter to test after graduation since I have to send my transcript? Will it be feasible for me to take boards before I start my job??

Thank you to all of you with experience/insight on this, I would appreciate VERY VERY much any help you can give me!! :D My professors do not know much about other than the BON in this state.

Hello,

I am also faced with the similar situation. The best way to find out what you need is to call the TN BON. I called and they told me that I would need to fill out the application for endorsement. Some items might not apply, so dont worry. Are you coming from a compact state, I'll be moving from texas which is in the compact along with TN so I just have to file the paperwork and apply for perm. residence when I move. I'm waiting for Covenant to call so I can put them down as a potential employer- this is asked on the application, but if I was you, I would do it now.

There is no difference, just send in the documents that the application asks for. You will need a completed set of transcipts to be sent. So not sure if you are going to make it in time...............perhaps get licensed where you are now, then endorse???

Depends on what the requirements are in the state where you are living now...Some BONs will let the nurse test as soon as they graduate, since another state, they wwill need to review your credentials, etc. and it can be a longer process. Have you sent in any documents at all yet?

I have not sent in any documents at all yet- we just found out about the requirements today in class. I would just go ahead and fill out the application, but I can't find a form that says "Application for License", just verification and it seems they are for people just shifting states. I guess I really just need to call them and talk to them. Thank you both for your suggestions! I wouldn't test in this state, b/c I have nowhere to live here once I graduate :) I will probably go back and stay with my parents for a couple weeks till I get moved into my new apartment. But thanks anyhow, I will call the BON tomorrow and hopefully they will be able to help me out somewhat. I didn't realize this was complicated. Maybe it's not and I'm just making it that way!! :stone I think it will work out...

There should be an application that says initial licensure by examination. That is all that you need.

That is what I thought too. There is not such a form online at the website. I am going to call the BON tomorrow and ask them about it. Thank you so much for your attentiveness and willingness to help so many people on this web site with so many things, suzanne4!! :)

The TN BON website, under the application area, states that on-line applications are not accepted for initial licensure. You need to contact them and they will send you out the packet.

Good luck................. :)
