New Grad!! :-) Robbed of Grad Ceremony

Published

I just graduated and I'm extremely excited except for the fact that I was robbed of my graduation ceremony due to weather. We picked up our cap/gown, pins, bought all white scrubs, got all dolled up and later found out that it has been cancelled. Are you serious?! I worked so hard for this moment not to mention, I was suppose to graduate wit da semester before this one. When I checked outside, the rain wasn't that bad. They said it's just a precaution measure. So just Postpone it!!!! It's a good thing my folks didn't fly out. My other classmates parents did....all the way from California, Kenya, New York to Kansas. The school announced that we will be receiving our diplomas n awards by mail, oh btw, "We're sorry, but good luck on your future." No pictures, memories, nothing. Should I be upset?? One of my classmates told me, she put her cap/gown on n enjoyed a bottle of wine by herself. I didn't even celebrate yet. Once, everyone I invited heard it was cancelled, they decided 2 find something else to do.

Congrats to those of you who just finished, it definitely wasn't easy.

Good Luck

Well, I feel your pain, but I can do one better. We didn't even get a graduation offered to us (unless we want to come back 6 months from now and walk with every department in the school (yippee). So, we started looking at trying to make our own and were told under NO cirucumstances were we to attempt to do anything that involved a cap and gown, as they would not sanction it. So, we talked about a pinning, and said right before it starts, everyone put on their cap and gown, because what are they going to do, fail us? Most people didn't feel it was worth it if it wasn't official, so it all fell apart. We took our final HESI, walked out the door and was told to expect our diploma in the mail. I hope you are able to get a chance to wear your cap and gown. I'd like to, but I'm afraid that I will be involved in life and 6 months into my career before I get a chance to walk, and I just don't think it will hold the same luster....good luck to you & congratulations on surviving nursing school!!

This is EXACTLY how it was in my school! We graduated a couple weeks ago, but are expected to come back in June to walk. The most frustrating thing is I go to an extension of the main campus and most of us have never stepped foot on the main campus, yet we are expected to come back in 6 months to walk with the hundreds of other students and nursing students we've never met! It was truly disappointing as I also was excited about completing this milestone. We also were not allowed to even have just a pinning ceremony. Lucky for us, the class below us threw us a graduation dinner and we were able to somewhat celebrate that way.

My classmates and I were thinking that because the novelty of graduation would have worn off in 6 months, we may just go to the ceremony and look at it as a "reunion" rather than a "graduation". That hopefully will make it more meaningful.

I'm in the same boat -- no graduation or pinning. I didn't think to look at walking in 6 months as a reunion. That's a good way to find the silver lining :)
