New grad RN job with no connections?

Published

Hi all,

I'm feeling pretty discouraged with the whole job searching process :( It feels like the only people from my class that have gotten jobs are those that have really great connections with recruiters/managers/directors in the hospital. I'm wondering if those of you that got a job w/out connections could share your story or any advice?

I think I'm going to start going hospital to hospital and just heading straight to the recruiters office to personally drop off my resume...as nervous as I am to do so! Has anyone had success doing this? I am sick of just submitting application after application online only to receive the classic "rejection" email.

I just feel like I am so behind. I graduated this past May (2011) and passed the Nclex on Aug. 4th....I feel like I've already missed all the hiring opportunities and no one is even looking anymore....Ugh, ok I'm going to stop being so negative, just needed to vent a little!

Any encouragement or advice would be greatly appreciated....Thank you so much!

What a joke it is to say that there is a nursing shortage! Oh PLEASE! I am so bitter and angry that these schools keep churning them out and here I am 6 months plus post graduation and cannot get a job! What are they thinking?!!!

None of these managers want to hire us new grads unless you are connected. I have twenty years of previous health care experience but am a new grad RN. I graduated in May, passed the NCLEX in July, and have had 3 interviews that were all from connections that I had but guess what?!! No job offer! As a matter of fact, my last interview I had 2 instructors backing but low and behold, after 3 weeks of waiting and calling and e-mailing, "Sorry, while you interviewed well the managers decided to go with someone with a bit more experience." Now I am back to job hunting and trying to work any connections I can. Of course it may not get me anything more than an interview as it has before.

Why did I change careers to be a nurse if these organizations and managers won't even give us the chance to prove ourselves?! What was the point in me adding more tuition repayment to my growing pile if no one will even hire me no matter what level of education I have!! ADN or BSN it makes no difference unless these stuffy nurse managers actually decide we are hireable!!

Nurses eat their young is absolutely true!! These managers just want to stick it to us because they had it stuck to them. Just remember dear managers, one day a nurse may be taking care of you and keep in mind it may be one that you refused to hire because they were a new grad with NO EXPERIENCE!

seriously this nursing shortage is a joke! sometimes i wish i majored in something else other than nursing. how is anyone of us supposed to get that experience if no one is willing to hire us? and this economy does not help the situation either. ughhhhhh

and I talked to a nurse recruiter recently and shes like there are soooo many new graduates from nursing just pouring out so the competition is that much worse. I wish they told that in nursing school, the realities of finding a job for a new grad, instead of all the sugar coated stuff.

and i dont like it when some places are like we do everything online...but there are no positions available online open to new grads!!!!

sorry...i'm just fed up at this point :(

i graduated in may 2011 with honors, a bsn, and a specialty course in critical care. i was unable to find a hospital job. i have worked for ltc/rehab skilled nursing facility with over 40 patients, poor pay and extreme lack of orientation. the was very toxic r/t unprofessional habits of administrators such as sleeping with employers, sucking up, personal vendettas against employees, and back stabbing all around. i still applied to hospital jobs with no luck. i cried myself to sleep many times. i want to be an er nurse more than anything. i've spend 6 years of my life to achieve my rn bsn goal. i made a year at the nursing home this june. unfortunately most employers do not consider nursing home experience at all. i was not going to relocate and leave the love of my life. i enrolled in kaplan fnp program, and was going to quit my nursing home job. i was going to enroll in an emt class or cna class just to keep some experience on my resume untill a hospital job opened up.

somehow, god gave me the strength to go into a hospital in person and demand to speak to the nurse manager. i dressed nice and compiled an extensive professional portfolio. i called in a few days to follow up. i got an interview the next week and now have gotten a job!!!!!! i told them how much i want this and thats why i went to see them. i told them i will learn anything they want me to learn, and they can train me the way they want. i've realzied that you need to be aggressive and assertive if you want a job. i also told them in my interview that i'm not going to give up and they will see again because this is where i belong. its been a long hard year, worst of my life, but now i have my dream job! dont giveup! show and tell the employers how much you belong there. make your own luck!
