  1. hello, I was just wondering if you or anyone accepted the position at Winthrop. If so, how was the pharmacology test during orientation? What did it consist of and was it unit oriented?
  2. OR-RN2011 Have you only worked in the OR or have you worked on the floor as well? I was wondering why you say tele would be a more marketable feature? thanks!
  3. Thanks for all the input! Sadly there are no open OR positions in my area open to new grads right now so I wanted to start with floor nursing to gain that one or two years of experience of acute care. I'm still on the fence of which area to lean towards...ugh. I've observed the OR/PACU during nursing school and really enjoyed it but I would def take your advice and shadow again once I start working to gain the full experience.
  4. I'm a new graduate and have the option between a telemetry floor or a med/surg floor. I ultimately want be work in the OR but I don't know which one of the units would be the better stepping stone. I don't which way to lean because the med/surg floor pays more and easier to travel too. Any advice or input would be much appreciated. Thanks!
  5. I was wondering if you could tell me what the interview process is like and what the pharmacology exam is like. Any information would be great. Thank you!
  6. I just wanted to ask how the interview process was like? What kind of questions they asked? Thanks!
  7. Can anyone explain their experience in the ED fellowship program? How was it? Is it a tough program and how is the ED floor been with the preceptors?
  8. I think the first step would be to contact someone from nursing admissions at Stonybrook to answer your questions about which classes would be accepted and what the minimum GPA requirement would be. Maybe try to set up a meeting with one of the staff to further discuss the requirements of what to do. An accelerated BSN program, in my opinion, is not about how difficult the work is but rather how fast paced everything is and how you can handle to workload since it condenses everything into 12 months. You are motivated and dedicated and as long as you stay on top of your work, you should be able to succeed in everything you do. As for recommendations, I suggest you get professional ones such as professors and previous employers who really know who you are and can attest to your skills and speak highly of you. Since you said you planned on volunteering at a hospital, depending on when you apply to school and how long you have been volunteering, maybe have the supervisor write you a recommendation (again, if they can attest to your skills and speak highly of you).
  9. Have faith! You can now utilize the experience you have and learn from these experience on how to better yourself as a nurse and how to deal with these people. Maybe you can apply to clinics or other areas of nursing others have mentioned before. I know how hard it is to find a job, I've been looking since May, but another job offer will come your way. You landed your first job and then a second one came your way and you are being active as a school nurse. Stay strong and keep searching for possibilities.
  10. I was wondering what you decided to do? Take both?
  11. Thanks for all the advice. I've been searching since May so its been a long struggle to stay focused. This helped and Congrats on the new job!
  12. I feel like everyone gets to the point where they are fed up with the job they are in so don't feel alone. Do you want to branch out from the psych field and maybe become an RN in the med/surg or whatever unit in the hospital? Maybe apply elsewhere in other psych places if you want to continue in the psych field? I feel as though you should do whatever you think is best so you can get the most out of your job.
  13. and I talked to a nurse recruiter recently and shes like there are soooo many new graduates from nursing just pouring out so the competition is that much worse. I wish they told that in nursing school, the realities of finding a job for a new grad, instead of all the sugar coated stuff. and i dont like it when some places are like we do everything online...but there are no positions available online open to new grads!!!! sorry...i'm just fed up at this point
  14. seriously this nursing shortage is a joke! sometimes i wish i majored in something else other than nursing. how is anyone of us supposed to get that experience if no one is willing to hire us? and this economy does not help the situation either. ughhhhhh
  15. I am a potential hire for a cardiac hospital, for the med/surg telemetry unit. I am somewhat of a new grad and never had any experience with the telemetry unit. From what I am hearing, it seems to be a whole lot of stress. I hear the ratio on this particular hospital is 1:7 and can sometimes can go up to 8 or 9. I don't know how I feel about this considering I've heard the orientation for this hospital is fairly short, about 4 weeks on the floor. I don't know if anyone can give me some insight or advice about working on this kind of stressful unit.
