Hello All,
I am a new graduate RN who was just offered a pt job at a LTC facility. Here are my concerns... my training will be 36 hours, I will have 25 pts, and since I will be working weekends myself and a young LPN will be on our own two-thirds of the time we are working. Someone will be on call put not there physically.
I love the elderly and would really like to work in LTC. I don't have a problem with working really hard but the care has to be safe that is a line I don't want to cross.
This scares me....feels like it might be too much too soon.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks :)

Ask for longer orientation. In ltc I oriented for.four weeks full time. It was barely enough!

RNmo, you are lucky! Im supposed to be getting 2 months orientation, but all I've gotten was about 5 days, then turned loose on my own a few times, then I'll be back with the preceptor a day here and there, only to be cut after med pass for low census. It's starting to seem like the only days I get to stay my full 8 hours is when they have me on my own, and when I'm with the preceptor (which is random, I never know walking into work, whether I'll be with someone or on my own that day), I get cut! I am not doing well working alone. I haven't even been shown where some of the supplies are for my treatments, let alone getting them done correctly or on time! I'm unfamiliar with the residents, so I'm seeing them for the first time ever, by myself. It's just craziness, and more importantly, unsafe. OP, you should definitely request more orientation, although if this is LTC, you probably wont get more, even if they promise it to you...since this is what I'm finding is happening everywhere. I'm starting to look elsewhere, this is ridiculous.
