Hi all,
I'm currently an elementary school teacher in my second semester of an ADN program. I'm thinking of school nursing when I graduate, but was also wondering if there are any new grad jobs out there that are strictly part time? I feel like all the new grad jobs are FT with residency programs. I'm not sure I want to completely switch from teaching but would be interested in possibly working as an RN some weekends or during the Summer. Will a hospital hire you PRN without experience? Thanks in advance!

I ended up taking a job as a private duty nurse working for an agency that specializes in home care for medically fragile children. So, I am getting peds experience and the agency actually works with school districts to get school nurses - granted, it is potentially/probably to work one on one with a specific medically fragile student, versus the nurse who sits in the office and administers inhalers and ADHD meds... When I started, I got training with feeding pumps, trachs, and vents.
Working for this type of company I can choose how many days/hours per week I want. So, yes, PT is definitely possible! Now, whether or not a hospital would do that/PT or per diem - in my area, definitely no. As a new graduate, we have no specific training for any department, so they would have to train a new nurse to do everything. Also, the market here is very competitive...but maybe your area is less saturated?
I will be able to get a job FT at the hospital working with medically fragile children - especially as I get more experience. But for now, I appreciate that I work part time and can work on my BSN during NOC shift.
