new grad pay for May '06

Published

I will be a new BSN grad in May. We've had various hospitals/health systems come to speak to us about jobs and what they offer. However all these folks are from Tuscaloosa or part of the B'ham area.

So what is the starting pay in your area? great benefits or so-so? Any other info you'd want to add.

will SOMEONE answer the poor woman? i want to know, too!

Hello :D

Sorry that no one responded to your question, but I will try.

I live in B'ham, and I work at UAB. I think starting pay is a little over 18.00/hr with 15% shift diff 3p-11p, and 20% shift diff pay 11p-7a. They also have a nurse intern program. You can work in six different units throughout the hospital I think for six weeks before you can decide which unit is for you. They have clinical nurse advancement program, which I think is great! Benefits include health, vision, dental, etc. If you want to get your BSN or MSN, UAB will pay up to 18hr/yr in tuition. You pay for the books of course. If you have children, half of their tuition is paid, etc. I can go on, and on.

And one more thing.... UAB is the only hospital in AL, that has Magnet (sp) status!!! UAB love their Nurses....:D

Any more questions? I will be glad to answer...

i don't know much about nursing lingo:

what is "magnet status"?

also, what is "clinical nurse advancement"?

My area, Chicago, for the 2 jobs i had interview for, one starts at 23.60 with PM, night and weekend shift differentiate unknow, but from student who graduated last year who worked there before, night shift can make up to 28.00.

another job starts at 24.76, PM+2.50, night +3.00, weekend +2.00.

I think here most hopital starting pay for new grads are around 23.00

Magnet status in an award that is given by the American Nurses' Credentialing Center. A Magnet hospital is one where nursing delivers excellent patient outcomes, better job satisfaction, and where there is a low staff nurse turnover. Nurses are involved in data collection and decision-making in patient care. Magnet hospitals are suppose to have open communication between nurses and other members of the health care team.

The Clinical Advancement Program is a career advancement program for full time and part time RNs in direct patient care. It is a way to encourage professional growth and development, and to recognize RNs have demostrated excellence in patient care. There are three advancement levels. Clinical Nurse I, II, and III.

In other words as a nurse gains experience, you grow professionally. You as a nurse over time knows what works clinically and what not works clinically.

So there is paper work involved in the CAP, but this suppose to improve job satisfaction, and retain staff. Knowing that you took part of improving a protocol for instance, gives you a since of pride, and it shows that you are more than just a staff nurse, but your opinion matters. YOU MATTER.

Update on new grad pay at UAB. We have just recently had some new grads come to our unit. The new grads are starting at $19.42/hr.

The hospital is doing a cost of living raise that the employees will see beginning July 1. The new grads were hired in at the new rate.
