I will be graduating in May 2005 and am thinking of working in Austin. I live in Waco now, but could relocate later on. Does anyone know about the pay rate for GN's at Brackenridge, or Seton? Are you able to do 12 hour shifts as a new grad? Any info would be appreciated!!

New grad pay is $18.40, may be a bit more since we just got a raise. 8 and 12 hours shifts but be prepared to start out on nights.

I'm a new grad also looking at working in Austin. What do people think of the different hospital systems: it looks like just the Seton hospitals and St Davids. What are the differences? Are either of them better training programs? better pay? better places to work?
Also-- what is working in OB like in Austin? I heard that midwives are not allowed in the hospitals, which is different from Philadelphia where I'm in school.
Thanks so much for any info you can send...

STARTED IN AUSTIN 2 YRS AGO AS A NEW GRAD AT SOUTH AUSTIN AND I HAVE REALLY ENJOYED IT. ST DAVIDS IS JUST SO BIG. AT SAH YOU REALLY GET TO KNOW THE STAFF, ETC. GOOD LUCK AND I WOULD CALL SAH.

I toured the Main Seton's ICU's about a year ago, the manager was friendly. They offered around 18. It was okay.

Hospitals in Austin have a tendency to not pay the best, esoecially considering the cost of living and rent/homes. Honestly they just aren't feeling the shortage as much as some cities because of the amount of new grads that UT and ACC put out.
