New Grad in the PACU?

Specialties PACU

Published

Hello all! I will be graduating nursing school in May 2009!! Whoopie! I did a summer externship in the PACU and loved it! I was wondering what my chances of being hired as a new grad in the PACU were? Does anybody know of any hospitals that hire new grads in the PACU? I would be willing to relocate. Thank you for your input.:yeah:

I've worked a student nurse tech in same day surgery PACU and loved it too! I keep hearing that most places want you to have ICU/critical care experience (for good reason) but I'm sure there are place out there that do hire new grads into a long preceptored program.

Good luck!

Thanks!! u too!! I have heard the same about critical care xperience. I have also heard that teaching hospitals are more likely to take you, esp if u have done an internship. I feel like teaching hospitals are great places for new grads, tho.

I was a new grad hired into PACU two years ago. I had worked as a tech in that PACU while taking my pre-reqs and attending nursing school. That is the only reason why they gave me a chance and hired me. I did have a long (almost 5 month) preceptorship and it was a steep learning curve but I would happily do it all again. I love working in PACU.

I did my preceptorship in the PACU and was hired there after I graduated. I was the first new grad they have ever hired as usually they want you to have ICU experience.I did a long residency, 5 or 6 months. I just finished my first year in PACU. I LOVE it though and can't imagine working anywhere else!! A lot of hospitals are making residencies where previously they only hired experienced people. Check out different places and see what you can find!
