New grad Nursing areas

According to nurses out there, which kind of floor should a new grad nurse start with if one had a choice? cardiology, CCU , Rehab , palliative , Long term cares, ETC

Where would a LPN learn gradually?

Please share experiences .

I was an LPN first, I started on telemetry. But I wanted to work ER. I actually wrote a letter to the nurse manager after applying for an RN ER job and stated all kinds of stuff about being a hard worker, and how that was where my heart was, even though I was an LPN. It worked and I got the job. I think with fewer pt's on tele that you have more time to look things up and learn learn learn. There really isn't anywhere were you have the luxury of learning gradually. B/c of money, it is basically trial by fire until you can be on your own.

I'd say what ever unit that will hire you. With the hiring freezes across Canada, you can't be fussy.

Where you want to be as a new grad and where you are in three years time are very different animals.

I do not think missnurse01 is in Canada, as no hospital will create a job for someone, as new positions have to be approved by management and the affected unions.

I would try to work on a surgical floor if at all possible. It will help you become comfortable with the basics!

Try to get into a teaching hospital, if possible. But as Fiona said, you will need to be flexible and go with whomever is hiring. Few jobs at the moment due to budget cuts.
