New Grad Nurse-Orientation

Nurses New Nurse

Published

Hi all,

I am an LVN starting my first job on Saturday. I am feeling anxious more than anything. Any tips anyone has for me? Also, if I do have to introduce myself during the morning huddle, what's a good script to follow? My brain is picking out the smallest details and making sure I am prepared. I went to nursing school during the pandemic, leaving me with zero experience. My facility is pretty flexible and understanding with me. At least the DON is. I had a few interviews with different facilities and this DON made me feel a little more confident in myself. I am trying not to beat myself up before I even started. I just know I need to take this seriously. I was told I'll have my preceptor, but also I'll have to do my own set of med passes in order to get meds out on time.

Take a deep breath...often. LVN's have it a little harder because you can't legally do some things, you are dependent on others to complete your tasks. This puts more stress on the team dynamics, so take a deep breath. Offer assistance when you're able as this can offset the poor perception RN's have of LVNs.

As for a script, I recommend just saying your name, what your title is and what you're able to do. Then you can also state that if anyone needs help, that you can help them. It will make everyone see you as extra support than someone that they have to pass IV meds for every shift.

I'd say my name, where I graduated from and that I'm a sponge and here to help and learn anything you will teach me.

Actually, I would say that I want to be a strong part of your team and although I'm new and inexperienced, I'll learn quickly. Help me help you.

"Lift me up, make me strong so that I can lift others up in the future." me - I said this!

Really though - you graduated.  Don't feel like am imposter.  You learned skills so you have them.  You passed the NCLEX.  You aren't invaluable - you are just inexperienced.  Good people will realize this and help you out.  I love my LPNs and ask them questions all the time.  There are things that you do more often than I do - and sometimes I forget what you can and can't do - so I'll ask.  Just be you because you are good enough just the way you are!!
