HI!
I'm in California and I just graduated from an MSN program and passed the ANCC PMHNP exam....
I applied for my NP license and Furnishing number. I requested my ANCC verification be sent to the the board- now I'm wondering what to do next.
It looks like I need to apply for my NPI, a DEA, and a controlled II substance certificate. Here are my questions:
1. Can I apply for a DEA without a job?
2. If I can apply for my DEA without a job; what address should I use? (I've read you have to have a business address to apply but I can't find any information to confirm this).
3. Besides obtaining a DEA, do I have to do something extra to prescribe controlled substances schedule III-V in California?
4. Do I take the schedule II course before I apply for my DEA or after?
5. I don't have a collaborative agreement because I don't have a job lined up yet; will I be able to obtain the DEA without a collaborative agreement?
If you have any other info I didn't know to ask; I would appreciate any advice!!
Thank you!

I suggest you go to the DEA website and start the application process. They have instructions there.
Get your NPI first. In California, you also have to take a little online class that is quick and easy - the Calif NP Association has this online class.

NPI then DEA. You can start DEA application, but you do want to use a business address. I finalized mine after job offer and before I started working -- most places anticipate time before starting and this should be enough to get DEA completed. Also recommend Clozapine REMS certification since you are PMHNP - you can't prescribe clozapine with out it and in some settings you'll see a LOT of it. It's an online training/certification and registry process. Pretty easy. This is another thing to do then save before finalizing because it will need to be linked to your DEA and employer.
For Schedules you'll need to look at state specifics - In my state I just click tick-boxes for whatever schedules I want/need approval for DEA application. But I'm also independent practice state. It may be different in California.
Thank you!! I appreciate your help!

Dude, let your employer pay for that. There is no rush to grab a DEA number...
