I hate to say this but what in the world is this place thinking putting you in that situation after only 10 days? Please tell them that you need more time. I understand the team nursing concept but are they expecting you to pass all the meds and do all the tx? Im sure you will be a good nurse but passing meds is serious biz and could have far reaching consequences. Please talk to the NM and tell him/her you are not ready for this type of responsibility after 10 days of training....JMO. I work in acute care on med surg and know what can and does happen......
1st: Take a DEEP breath!
2nd: Get in early for your shift to get organized and read your pts charts.
3rd: Get a GOOD report!
4th: DON'T be afraid to ask questions and/or for help. New grads need more than 10 days of orientation.... and the rest of the staff on your unit KNOWS it.
5th: Document, document, document.
6th: Never let anybody see you sweat it. Fake it till you make it.
Best of luck.
Hang in there. There is almost no way anyone gets to do tyr or learn everything in orientatio. I have been a nurse for 10 years and I am still doing and learning new things each day.
Is there a nurse on your unit who seems to enjoy teaching? Keep your eyes and ears open and speak up about your desire and willingness to learn new skills.
10 days orientation is no where near long enough for a new grad. I hope that you have a supportive crew that will provide you with learning experiences.
well, with the nursing shortage in this country they probably had no choice other than to feed you to the sharks. but you will do fine im sure and if you have a question ask, ask, and ask again. if you don't feel ready you should let the nurse manager know. take a deep breathe and it will be fine....nurse

Hi guys, I am done with my 10 days of preceptorship in med surge and will be on my own next week. I am really scared as my preceptorship was not very good. I had a really good one for 7 days of it, then I had two bad preceptors after that where I felt like I learned nothing from them, not to mention they were not very kind. One even caused me to have a med error. There are so many things I have not had a chance to do since school (NG tube, catheters, etc.) and things I have never done. I'm just hoping when things come up the RN will show me the first time. I'm on team nursing in med surg with 11-15 patients and it's stressful. Any suggestions from you all would be so appreciated. There are always judgment calls re orders, etc. that I don't feel confident with myself about. Help please guys. You are my support. Thank you in advance for your help.
