New Grad with GI Offer

Specialties NP

Will accepting a GI position as a new grad force me to stay in this specialty? I like GI, but worry that if I accept I will be not be able to transition to another area in the future if I wish to do so. Has anyone accepted a specialty position as a new grad and found it difficult to change to another area?

Specializes in Surgery.

I turned down a pediatric GI position as a new grad. The scope seemed too narrow to me and I was worried about pigeon-holing myself. If you can find something a little broader it will probably benefit you a little more unless the pay and benefits are incredible..

Based on my personal experience, yes you get pigeon holed. However I know a couple of mid levels who were able to transition from one specialty to another.

I would be afraid of being pigeon-holed for sure. I am recently considering an inpatient/outpatient hybrid position with a local hospital where I'm from, but it is only for the adolescent eating disorder clinics/service. I'm not quite sure that I'd want to just be doing that for the upcoming couple years in my early NP career (I've only been an NP for ~2 years)
