New Grad from Brooklyn thinking about relocating to Texas

I have been thinking about relocating to Texas for an entry level RN job. I will be graduating with an ADN in December 2009 and it really looks like the job market here (NYC) for hospitals is super saturated. I really want to work in a great facility and get hands on experience. I wont be taking the NCLEX till february or early march 2010 though. St.Lukes, looks like a great facility. I saw that there are location in Woodbine, Houston, and a few other places. But, I have no idea what to expect culturally in different areas of Texas. I am born and raised Brooklyn, went to school upstate, did AmeriCorps out west so I have been around. But, If I do this I will be moving to a completely new part of the country solo. Ugh, I dunno. Any advice?

I'm not familiar with Woodbine, Texas. I'm in Dallas, which is quite muticultural. People are from all over out here so you should do fine. Houston is great!! I love San Antonio- I'm not too sure about East Texas or West Texas!! I would definitely come down and visit several places before making the big move!! :D

I live in East Texas and I'm moving to Dallas this month for a new grad internship position. I think you will do great in Texas....even East Texas. However, the hospitals here are small and I don't believe that their internship programs (if they even have one) is very formal or extensive. I would definitely go for DFW area, Houston, Austin or San Antonio. I don't think it will be as big of a culture shock as you think. I used to travel to New York, Buffalo and Brooklyn for business. The only difference is that people in Texas smile and speak to each other constantly. You may get tired of nodding, waving, smiling and saying thank you.... but otherwise you will be fine!!

Houston job market isn't that great right now. A lot of hospitals are coming of hiring freezes and only wanting experienced RN's. I have had no luck and I'm graduating with a BSN as a 2nd degree, many years of health care and social work experience and decent grades. Some hospitals are only hiring a handful of new grads. I haven't had any lucky but, maybe it's just me? Half of the recruiters won't even call or email you back.
