New grad in ASC...Help please!

Hi everyone,

When i began my job hunt, I knew I wanted to work in surgery. It didn't matter to me where, hospital or ASC, but somewhere that will hire new grads and train them. So I began searching everywhere and found a position at a ASC that didn't require experience because training would be provided. I happily applied and received a phone call the following day. I interviewed with the doctor who is owner of the surgery center, got hired 2 days later, and began work the following day. This is where everything goes wrong....

I get to the facility and no one knew I was there for training/orientation. The girl in the front desk takes me to the back and introduces me to the nurse that will supposedly train me. She shows me the basics: paperwork, how to get the patient ready for surgery, etc..but nothing formal. Basically there was no training at all like promised! Mind you, I am a new grad and am not familiar with the type of equipment or paper work used in the OR. None of the other staff were kind enough to help me when I asked for their help. They seemed bothered by me asking so many questions and being new I will have a lot of them. I was thrown in there expected to know everything. I felt so incompetent, stupid, and useless. Why claim on your website and job ad that there is "Extensive training and orientation provided" if there really isn't any and we are expected to know where everything is?!

When the day was over, I spoke with the doc and told him that the day was extremely overwhelming and that I need the training that was promised. He seemed to just brush it off and said what training do you need?? Are you seriously going to ask me what type of training when you know well that I am a new grad and am in need of any right now?! All I could do when driving home was cry. No I am not weak, but what do they expect of me?! It was too much for my first day.

I go back on Sunday at 6am and every time I think about it, I get nauseous. I don't know what to do, should I give it another try? I am afraid that there won't be any other nurses that day and I would be left alone. Any tips and input is much appreciated. I apologize for the post being so long, but I needed to vent somewhere. Thanks for reading!

WOW! I'm a new grad myself currently studying for the nclex && applying for jobs... But this scares me because I know I will need extensive training once I step foot in the hospital.. Or anywhere! ..

I probably won't be much help here, but what I would do is: speak with HR/employer & see what kind of training other nurses had in that facility & how long, and I would ask what does "extensive training" consist of.... You want to be able to deliver safe effective patient care and feel comfortable in your position with an (amazing) preceptor to show you the ropes!!! Good luck!!!!

I'm afraid this job ain't gonna work.

I work pre-op and okay...I find it really easy....but geeze I'm an old experienced nurse and I have been doing it for a long time, and I'm sure my orientation was at least a week.

Are you in the United States? If you want to try to stick it out you can ask me, or any pre op nurse, what the critical steps, paper work, and interventions a pre op patient must have or do with a patient prior to OR.

But there is no shame for you to tell the Dr. you cannot work there without at least a week orientation and if that can't be done you will respectfully quit.

It isn't worth getting fired, and feeling even worse than you do now!
