New Grad accepted first position

Nurses New Nurse

Hello all, I accepted my first ...well second...position. The first I decided was too much responsibility and passed on. This position is LTC at a local facility that I like....I will have less than 25 pts...my concern is that I will only have one weeks training. I asked if I could have additional unpaid training and that is not an option....You would think places would want their employees to be well trained :/

They called me for an interview and the interim DON looked at my resume and said OH you have no experience and we can't use you.....then she gave me 10 reasons why I would be putting my license at risk etc etc.....then we had a long conversation and at the conclusion of that she offered me a job.....at which point I said won't I be putting my license at risk?? all so confusing....I took the job bc the orientation was immediately following the interview....and I really want to gibe LTC a try....if it doesn't work out a local hospital will hire me for acute care with good training....it just takes a few months to get in...what are your thoughts????

Thank You all soooo much for your comments and support!!!

As a new grad, you should not be put into a supervisory position - many state BONs are very explicit in this regard. This may be the source of the DON's concern. Make sure you are clear about your BONs position on this also. If you are going to have any supervisory responsibilities, your employer should orient you to these as well.

Just to clarify - it would be a violation of Federal law (FLSA) to provide you with additional training with no pay. Once you are an employee, they have to pay you for any work you do & this includes time required to complete mandatory training.

Good luck on your new job.

My opinion: They were desperate. Learn as much as you can, as fast as you can, and get out as soon as you can after that.

Not sure what you thought was "too much responsibility" in the first job that you passed on, but you ain't seen nothin' like the responsibility you're gonna have now.

Thank You for your comments...GrnTea.The first job I passed on was weekends only and since I would be the only RN on the premises 8 hrs of the 12 hour shifts I would be in charge of the facility in addition to 25 pts I decided that was too much. The position I'm going to take is an RN floor position the DON is going to put me on the wing that is the least busiest. HouTx you are right I won't be able to get any additional unpaid training.and I will check on my states regulations regarding new nurses in supervisory roles. I would really like to work in long term so hope that this works out.

GrnTea I do believe you were rt....I went for my first of 4 days of training only to find out the nurse to pt ration is 1:33 or more....as a new grad I honestly don't see how I can safely do this....
