New to Forum! Hoping to Commission into the AF.

Published

Hey All!

New to the forum but have been keeping up on the posts. Especially the ones pertaining to the AF. I'm a new RN, 1 yr experience working at an acute hospital. I started the paperwork late 2009 and I'm pretty much all done. I actually have my interview next week or so. I'm really excited and hope to be able to get in by the end of this year. It sounds like there's a heavy amount of applicants so slots are minimal. Hope I get lucky!

This is probably another thread itself but any advice on the interview? What to expect after the interview? More waiting?!!

I wanted to try and establish a rapport with everybody here. You all seem so supportive! Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Anny,

I'm looking at COT as an adventure. Pretend you are on an episode of survivor! Maybe without that backstabbing stuff though. lol.

LOL, I'm going to have to toughen up then. I'm such a girly girl. It will definitely be an adventure. Do you know what unit you'll be working in? I'm in ortho right now and I really like it. I'm wondering how they choose which unit you'll be on.

I'm going in as a critical care nurse due to my experience. I have been forwarned that I may not get assinged to the icu if there is a need elsewhere. I really can't imagine doing med/surg, but it is what it is. I will do what they tell me. You find this out only when you arrive and report to your duty station.

Don't count on it - five weeks of military running around for some civilians is more than enough to stir up the storm...you'd be amazed what COMMISSIONED OFFICERS and grown adults will come up with.

Sometimes you find out before; it depends on your chief RN and the RN manager on the gaining floor. I knew from the day I was accepted I was coming to Lackland to the adult BMT unit here.

Carolinapooh,

Lucky you knew offhand which unit you'd be in. If they tell me Med/Surg I'll laugh. Med/Surg what?! Idk how it is in the mainland if they split their units. I still consider ortho med/surg. We don't really have a "med/surg" floor.

I have never seen a qualified ICU nurse get initially assigned any place other than ICU (as long as there is an ICU to goto at least). I have known a couple of ICU nurses that got "fired" from ICU and put in med-surg, but there were valid reasons for them being moved.

FYI: If you guys know what base you are going to you can contact the Chief Nurse introduce yourself, then ask what unit you are going to be assigned to, and who your new boss will be. As long as you are professional (which I am sure all of you are) then it is actually a good way to get to know your bosses ahead of time.
