I've been in my current ER for about 6 years. In that time we have had 6 ER directors. Some awful, some trying . Is this normal?????

Our ER main doc says it's the worst job; if you try to please mgmt, all the nurses hate you. If you try to please the nurses, you get fired. I find this to be true. The ones who were "pro nurse" lasted a very short time. The ones who were "pro mgmt" lasted longer; but were so terrible. Is this the same in all ER's? or is my mgmt just worse?

While my ER hasn't had that many directors in 6 years, we have been through 3. I totally agree with you though. The pro-nurse ones get fired and the pro-managment ones are horrible.

Ours tend to get fired because of not being able to do the impossible and bring our LOS to a crazy number or raise our satisfaction scores in a short period of time.

Yep. I agree. It's similar in other units, too -- not just ER's -- but it seems to be more pronounced in ER's.

People don't always appreciate how difficult the job of unit manager/director is. Perhaps if "both sides" of the situation (staff and upper level administration) would stop blaming the manager/director for everything and start being more supportive, things would improve -- but I'm not holding my breath waiting for that to happen.

everyone hates an ER director for different reasons. They are either up management's behind or in favor of the staff nurses and management WILL get rid of them. It's a high turnover position. Never easy to please either end of the spectrum, I'm sure.
