New entrance requirements at El Camino

U.S.A. California

Published

Hi,

does anyone know if the new entrance requirements for the El Camino nursing program in Torrance will be applied to the people starting in the Spring '09 semester.

I just saw their website and they're saying that it will be effective starting Spring '09, however when I spoke to the nursing department less than a month ago they didn't tell me anything, they just told me that I would start in the Spring.

I'm so tired of these people, they say one thing and then they go ahead and change everything, and they're so unhelpful.

I guess I will go and ask them again tomorrow but I was wondering if there's anyone here that might know what's going on.

Thanks for your help

Where did you take your pre-reqs? You can't take Micro or Physio without Chemistry at El Camino.

I'm assuming you probably took your pre-reqs elsewhere. In any case, if you have completed Micro and Physio, then I really don't think you need to worry about taking Chemistry to apply at El Camino but check with a couselor to be sure.

Honestly I am so burnt out from the classes because I did not have bio 1st. I had to put in that much more time trying to understand my classes. Can you believe I started with Micro first, then Anatomy and Physio because the counselors said start with what ever fits into your schedule. And I just completed physio in 5 weeks. Man what a challenge. I could use the rest if I don't have to take chem.

if you were told a start date and accepted a spot, then you are in the nursing program. it is so discourging to see negativity towards a school that accepted and has a spot for you. if any changes you will be notified with ample time and consideration. the program is excellent and you are already starting on the negative side of things. you will have a long program and even longer for your class mates if your attitude dosent change. please chill out and be ready for feb. 17. a classmate. please no negativity in the classroom learning environment. thanks

El Camino requires you to have proof of the chemistry prerequite if you took it somewhere that didn't require it. I "believe" the catalog states that one year of high school chem can be used as a prereq. Go talk to a counsellor.

I don't really know what you're talking about! If you are talking to me, I wasn't being negative. I was just telling what happened to me last semester and I was sad to know that apparently it happened again this semester.

I'm looking forward to start in a week and I have a very positive attitude towards the program.

The way the nursing office staff dealt with their mistake last semester, wasn't really professional and they didn't even offer an apology but I know mistakes can happen and so after a few days of disappointment I got over it.

Are you starting the program next week?

i was looking at that message as well. dont pay that person any attention!! congrats on being accepted to the program, you are giving me hope as of now. i hope that you have a great experience during the program and know that i am counting on you to keep me posted.....:bowingpur lol. i didnt take your message as negative and was just about to post a comment regarding that, but you already did, so there is no need.

anyhow, congrats again and best of luck to you......

hi dienne, are you positively sure they don't need chemistry to apply?? Because I have all my sciences done already at harbor and I didnt need to take chemistry b/c I had one year of high school chem. I'm planning to take chem over the summer b/c I'm scared they're going to need it. But if what you said is true then that is a life saver! Thanks please let me know if youre positively sure!!

nursingstudentv,

you dont need chem for the nursing program. its only listed as a prereq because you cant take it micro or at some schools even physio without it. if you were able to take those classes already, because you had one year of year of high school chem that was accepted, then you should apply. here is the link to the adn program requirements:

hope this helps.......:wink2:

If you are already at Harbor, I suggest you stay there. Sure it's in an unpleasant part of town, but as I'm sure you already know it is relatively safe. Their facilities and instructors are better. Their waiting list is shorter. Their program is more organized. Their NCLEX pass rates are far superior. El Camino nursing students (not talking about pre-nursing students, though there is that as well) have been taking nursing classes like Pharmacology at Harbor during intersessions. The word is local hospitals and nurses prefer Harbor students by a landslide. El Camino has been at risk of losing their LCM program for the past few years...to Harbor. Don't take my word for it. Ask around. In my opinion, it does not make sense to switch to El Camino if you are already in at Harbor.

hi aaahhsuga,

i was under the impression that el camino was one of the best rn programs around. please do give any additional information you may have or how i find out on my own. what is lcm by the way?

hi karmarene,

lcm stands for little company of mary hospital. they offer an evening program through el camino. all classes and clinicals are at lcm and taught by el camino faculty. for some reason, one harbor instructor was brought in to teach last semester.

the only places i've heard el camino is the best is on their old website and at their info session, lol. most schools say that about their program, lol.

nclex pass rates are here http://www.rn.ca.gov/schools/passrates.shtml

el camino has hovered in the low 80s for the past few years. the el camino website boasts 93% for some reason. if you include the el camino compton program they were at 35-52% in 3 of the last 5 years.

this pales in comparison to harbor college's 5-year pass rate range of 92-100%. :yeah:

harbor supposedly better prepares students for clinical as well. ask around.

I applied to the program in March 2007 and started in February 2008. This was after I received my acceptance letter that I was set to start in August 2008... a spot opened up early for me!

Sure, it can be a bit unorganized, but I'm grateful I'm in the program. The instructors (clinical and theory) are very good, very knowledgeable and very supportive. And sure, you've got the bad apples, too. But they don't reflect the entire program. The Compton campus is new to the program and still going through growing pains.

I am not sure what the new entrance requirements are, but I hear that both the ECC and Harbor College programs are excellent. I've never bashed the Harbor program or their students. I attended a free session/seminar over the summer where we had instructors from Harbor. I forget her name, but she was nice, thorough, and approachable. Nurses have to support eachother, right? :yeah:

The summer program is sponsored by LCMH. The instructors at the summer program are from Harbor. That sure is a funny "coincidence" considering that the night program is through El Camino and that the El Camino's night program has been on shaky ground for so long. I heard they still have a Harbor instructor teaching at El Camino's night program.
