New CM - kinda missing direct pt care

So I’m in my second week of orientation as a new case manager at a new hospital and I find myself missing patient care. I hear floor nurses talking and feel like I’m no longer part of the action. Anybody else go through this?

I try to remind myself of all the stress on the floor, but then I see how relaxed the nurses seem at this new facility and wonder if I would’ve been happier as a bedside nurse somewhere else. I was definitely over the 12-hr shifts. Plus, I’m making alot more money as a Case Mgr. TIA for any feedback.

Hi SunnyFLRN,

I am sorry you feel isolated- i hope it got better?

I was wondering, however, how do you like case management? Did you grasp the content quickly? Is it challenging to adapt? I am going to start CM job in 2 weeks and I am so nervous. I currently work in ICU and while i know i will miss the action i am overdue for a break. I will be working in the ED btw. Please share your experience.

I feel exactly the same way. This is my 3rd week as an OB case manager and when I go to the units I miss doing patient care, which is something I never thought that I would say. When I was at the bedside I HATED the stress, the long shifts, the sass I would get from doctors. I didn't feel appreciated. But now, when I go to the units I feel like they don't see me as "one of them". Even though I could jump in and help you get ready for your stat C-section in a second.

Everything is a trade off though. I'm not as stressed, I have typical hours that work for me, and I don't have to work holidays and weekends. I think in the long run, this new position will be better for my health and sanity!

How is it going for you? Are you enjoying the change? ?
