Hello fellow nurses,

I will be starting in a cardiac unit next week. I have seen the floor and is so overwelming. I had an idea about how the pt turnover would be but I guess I am scared I will fail. I want to learn as much as I can about the heart but I am just so afraid I will miss something. Please anyone calm my nerves down. I really need any encouragement

Go in with an open mind. Expect the unexpeted. Ask questions, ask questions, and never assume. Will you have a preceptor? If so, you won't be on your own. Listen and take note as to what they are trying to teach you. You will get the hang of it as long as you stay focused.:smokin:

mamason, thanks you so much for writing. I actually had my 1st day today and had the best preceptor ever. I just have to come up with my own paper system of keeping report together. How do you do it?

Cardiac units can be overwhelming, very sick patients, high acuity.

Go in with an open mind, be a sponge try to absorb everything, be humble, ask questions many questions, know who your "go to" people are aside from your preceptor. Be a team player, in this type of unit team work is very important.

Best of luck!!

:heartbeatHi, relax, follow your heart. You are only human. Remember though, the patients are human too. You must take it one heart beat at a time. Ask questions, watch, learn and enjoy. I have been in Cardiac for 10years and love it! Never, I mean never, feel any question is too small or petty to not be asked. Ask away. Remember your preceptor, charge nurse, even your unit manager had to start somewhere. Practice! Learn to read ecgs as you go, do not expect too much out of yourself Good luck!:redpinkhe

Thank you so much guys. I feel a lot better. The nurses on the floor have been so friendly and supportive. I love it so far. Is just alot of info all at once. I have to read up on MIBI"S and stress test, cath lab and so on.
