The concensus regarding new guidelines will not roll out until after AHA publishes their findings in their journal "circulation." I expect this to occur the end of this year. After publishing the findings, a transition process will occur for instructors and then providers. I expect full transition to take most of 2011.
Being that AHA guidelines are based on concensus (Anybody who knows anything about concensus will understand, think "surviving sepsis."), I would not call them protocols in the sense that a single person such as a medical director made the decision. It's kind of like a bill. One version of a bill goes to congress, and a totally different bill emerges with many people not actually supporting aspects of the law, but accepting it because they really like a small portion of the law. This is very similar to what occurs when organisations come up with concensus statements.
they do update q 5 yr - but books are not out till the next year. I expect changes late this year.
I teach BLS and ACLS and the updates occur in 2010- we will be informed of changes this fall and will hold classes to update all of the isntructors. We will start teaching the new changes in early 2011.
