Hi everyone!
I am currently a grade 12 student who has had my heart set on Algonquin's Practical Nursing program for over a year now (but I am also open minded to any other suggested RPN programs in Ontario).
The prerequisites for this course are Gr 12 Math (college level or equivalent), Gr 11 or 12 Biology and Chemistry (college level or equivalent), and Gr 12 English (college level or equivalent).
I was wondering if there is a higher consideration for U level courses? This is because in my application I want to include my Grade 11 Biology U course (84%), Grade 12 Chemistry U course (estimated 75%), Grade 12 English U course (87%), and Grade 12 Math C course (estimated 85%). I am worried that these grades are not high enough, even if the minimum requirement is 65%, because it is to my knowledge that this program is extremely competitive. Does anyone happen to know last year's grade cut off or a required grade to get accepted to this program? Also, I understand that I must do a HPAT test when I apply. How hard is it? What sort of questions are asked for the science portion of it?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your time,
Judy

Algonquin college would accept your U level course. Even if you did them in grade 12. They said either your grade 11 or 12 marks. In that case it would be high enough. For the HPAT test if I remember clearing that there is some example question, look it up and practice it. It won't be hard if you practice. They would ask you some biology, chemistry, english, maths question in it. Look more in details: The Practical Nursing Program ~ Algonquin College
I would also look at the one at St-Lawrence College: Practical Nursing - Brockville: St. Lawrence College :Practical Nursing (this is the Brockville link, but it is offer in Cornwall and Kingston has well).
Do you plan on going for the BScN after?
Good luck

I got in with a very bad math grade, everything thing else was over 80%.
Thank you! Funny because I was planning on applying to St. Lawrence (Kingston) as well, and it doesn't seem like I need to do a test for the program. And the reason why I want to do practical nursing first is because it opens up the most paths for me- I can either bridge to get my Bscn, or work a couple years as an RPN so I can move out and go back to school. I'm getting high 80s in all my prerequisites so I should be fine, besides my high 70 in chemistry... Did you do the HPAT test? How was it? Any advice? :) Thanks again ktrop03

thanks for your feed back :) I'm not doing great in chemistry, however everything else I'm getting are in the mid-high 80s. I wonder if there's higher consideration for U courses as well. Did you/are you enjoying the program?
I started this week actually. The program is very very tough and I'm enjoying every minute of it so far.
