Neonatal/Pediatric Organization

Published

Hello fellow allnurses members,

currently my university has a plethora of organizations and societies, but none of which fit my direct interests and needs. Many of our organizations are just general pre-med/pre-nursing, or a general volunteer society. I am very interested in pediatrics, and neonates and it saddens me that none of our organizations revolve around this specialty. I am currently a nursing student, and I am a part of 3 organizations, but they are so general I feel like I am not contributing nor is it benefiting me. I was thinking about starting a new organization at my university, one that revolved around kids and infants, for those who were interested in having a peds or neonate health professional career. I need some help planning it out though, I don't want it to be a basic organzation, and want it to have a real impact on the members who join, as well as my community. So far, I have looked into doing volunteering at my local children's hospital, as well as reaching out and networking to see if any ped MDs, RNs, or NPs would want to come in and give some friendly advice on how to pursue such a career, as well as provide insight on their chosen profession. When you were in school did you have a similar organization?? What did it involve? Any opinions or advice on my idea will be greatly appreciated!!!!

Have you tried looking into student memberships options for nursing organizations geared towards those specialties?

March of Dimes

Dance Marathon (for Children's miracle network)

Student Nursing Organization

Work at the campus daycare

Create your own organization & raise money for a children's cause :)

I hope that helps!

I highly recommend starting a campus March of Dimes chapter!

These are the professional associations for neonatal nurses; I suggest you peruse their sites for student memberships, scholarships, etc. This one is partnered w/NSNA, so that might be of interest:

National Student Nurses Association - Academy of Neonatal Nursing Their journal, Neonatal Network, has articles that are more practical, very helpful in understanding neonatal issues.

Association of Women's Health, Obstetric, and Neonatal Nurses This organization is aimed @ OB-GYN, w/interest in Mother-baby as well, but mother-baby is not too much focused.

NANN.org is another one, but I couldn't get it to load. They tend to be more scholarly.

Check out these associations.

One comment: right now, you are being educated as a generalist. If your Uni offers a senior practicum, internship or something like that, try to take that opportunity to work in a NICU. Most NICUs train you after they hire you.

Best wishes for success!
