has anyone applied for the 2007 NELRP?
i'm still confused. is this like teach for america where you sign up and they place you somewhere in the country? or can we pick wherever we work as long as it is qualified in the guidelines? I know the website says there isnt a list of affiliates but if our current hospital isnt qualified and i wouldnt mind moving or switching jobs, do i just keep asking HR departments if their hospital matches the qualifications?
Also, can i still be a NICU nurse or do only certain jobs within a faciliy match?
thanks

They don't place you; you have to be working at the critical need facility when you apply. I think there's a list of covered areas and types of facilities but they don't have actual hospital and nursing home names on there. It doesn't matter what department you work in but there are specifics on how many hours you work per week (I think it's 32), no more than so many weeks vacation, etc. I don't know if HR departments would all know if they qualify or not; at least in our area it's not that well known that this program is available. I applied 2 years in a row before getting approved. Do make sure you like the facility you're at before committing. The penalties are not good if you default on the committment.

I understand being leery, to an extent. But I'd be paying on those loans for YEARS and YEARS anyway, and I'm planning on being at my current hospital for AT LEAST 2 years, probably way more than that ..... so I don't have a whole lot to lose, rather I have much more to gain. Maybe it is a gamble, and (God forbid) something might come up in which I won't be able to work, but it's a chance I'm willing to take.
To each their own. It's not for everyone.
