Negotiating schedule after job offer

Published

I received my first NP job offer (yay!). I'm interested but moving from 13 shifts a month to 9-5 M-F is going to be incredibly difficult with childcare, etc. I want to negotiate 4-10 hour days instead. This is in an outpatient cancer clinic. I have seen other NPs in identical roles at related offices doing 4 10s while I was doing clinicals, etc, so I know it isn't unheard of. How do I go about broaching this? Any advise welcome! Thank you!

I assume that since you are wanting to approach them with the idea of changing your hours to 4 10 hour days that this clinic is in fact open 10 hours a day and not only 9-5. So I'd be curious to find out how they currently cover the additional open hours (before 9 or after 5). Could you find something of value within these hours that would benefit the practice that would make your request more compelling?

I'm guessing this is not a deal breaker or you would have brought it up during the selection process.. so simply humbling asking and explaining the situation could go a long way and the worst they can say is no.... and it may present itself in the future where this schedule could accommodated for you.
