Negotiating Salary

Published

Hi everyone,

I am a new grad RN and I was recently hired as a new grad RN. I accepted and I signed all the paperwork. I am just waiting to start on June 1st.

I was wondering, is it too late for me to negotiate salary? Also, if I do negotiate salary how many dollars increase can I ask? Is $5 too much?

Thank you so much.

Cathy, if you don't mind me asking, what was the starting pay that was offered to you?

Specializes in Neuro/Med-Surg/Trauma ICU.

Hi I don't mind. It was $31.74 + benefits. FT Day Shift

Specializes in Neuro/Med-Surg/Trauma ICU.

I think it may also be that my friend was hired in ER. But yes she is getting almost $40. I am not sure if she is night though.

What city are you in? And do you have a BSN? I'm from New York and starting school this fall!

When it comes to wage negotiation, another thing to consider is whether or not the hospital is unionized or not. If it's not, you are free to try to negotiate your own raises (I agree you don't negotiate salary as a newbie). If the hospital is unionized, you probably work under a contract that has already been negotiated on your behalf. Your raises come based on a pre-determined set of criteria (length of service, additional credentials, etc.).

Specializes in Management, Med/Surg, Clinical Trainer.

Almost 40...is she also a new grad and at the same hospital?

Agree with others, she could be including her night diff.

Specializes in Neuro/Med-Surg/Trauma ICU.

nope new grad at a different hospital... in riverside-corona area... i dont know if she is pm shift. but she is er. thank you everyone

For future reference, the time to negotiate is when you receive the offer, but before you accept it. Congrats on the new job!
