Needing BSN Admissions Advice

Published

I graduated in 2003 with a B.S. in Political Science and a 2.3 GPA (yikes...I was more into partying than school). Well now I would like to go back to school to take me prerequisites in order to apply to a BSN program here in Houston. However, I am really afraid that my undergrad GPA with crush any chances of being accepted to any program no matter how well I do on my prerequisites. I know that overall GPA is looked at as well as science GPA. Is there any hope for me and what should I do to show that I am not the immature, unfocused student that I was 7 years ago? I thought about taking more science classes than necessary but I don't know if that will do the trick. Any help is greatly appreciated and thanks in advance.

i feel your pain! i went to school over 20 years ago and could have cared less then but unfortunately many schools look at the overall gpa. call each schools that you are looking at applying to and find out what they look at. sometime they only look at the prerequisites. i am looking at going to a community college now that only look at 7 of the required prerequisites, which all but one i recently took which helps me a lot. i sort of wish i never transferred in any of my classes and just started over so that i could go to other schools...... good luck!

It all depends on the school you attend as the admission requirements are different. But generally, the fact that you have already obtained a degree is looked at positively. I would focus on your pre-reqs, especially the science courses and make the very best grades possible. I would volunteer at hospitals or gain community experience because this is highly favored and schools don't just look at your GPA. Last but not least, I would write a personal statement that doesn't make excuses, but rather give you a chance to "plead your case" and show them that you are now serious about your education, becoming a nurse, and your current work ethics prove that. Best of luck!
