need tips and methods to count intercoastal//vetebral space

like when looking for apical space at 5 intercoastal space etc just having a hard time counting the spaces

I count down from the first rib to the 5th near the sternum and then go over to where it should be. I turn pt over midway to the left and ask them to exhale and hold it for a bit. Remember though. The apical impulse is only palpable in about half of adults. Hope this helps.
