hello,,I need help...what are the differences bet Nsg homes in US and US hospital? And their advantages and disadvantages, as a Nurse.. Tnx

nurse ratio is higher in NH than hospital. Probably less RN support in NH. Orientation will probably be less than what you would get in a hospital.

Hospital patient load is much smaller, can be just as many as 5 patients in CA. With a nursing home, 30 to 60 that you are legally responsible for.

Hospitals have orientation of usually six weeks minimum, nursing home you will be lucky to get three days. If you are not starting there with exceptional skills to begin with, it is going to be a dangerous place for you to be. Also one of the highest areas that a nurse can lose their license in.

Not good for a foreign nurse for their first assignment in the US.

As suggested above, Hospital is always the better choice over nursing homes. The ratio is high in nursing homes while in a hospital, typically 1:5. You get a better training in a hospital than in nursing homes.

You will learn more than these once you start applying for a job here in the US. You will know the advantages and disadvantages of each as an immigrant and as a nurse.

May I know if the hospital orientation of foreign nurses let's say 12weeks is a paid orientation? what I mean to say is that will these nurses receive their salary while under the orientation?

Hospitals or NH will not give you orientation unless you are hired. You receive pay while undergoing orientation. In the hospital setting, they have you attend BLS, EKG and ACLS classes and you are being paid by attending those and they also pay for the registrations in those classes.

may i ask, some said that when u are in NH there is LPN or caregivers, nurses is just a supervisor, is that true?

Yes, it's true. You have to see it for yourself. There is a difference between the advantages of H from NH if you're talking about nursing and if you're talking about immigration.

not always, have seen threads in the general nursing forum indicate either or

I would suggest having a search in the general nursing forum and maybe even asking the question and see what you get back. I am sure there are plenty of threads regarding nursing managment and care in nursing homes.
