Need to Review and Can't Afford a Refresher Course - Please Help

Published

I was previously an ER and ICU nurse who became ill five years ago. I'm doing better and want to go back to work part-time but I know that there have been changes. I want to make sure I'm proficient and intend to review through self-study.

In the student nurses forum I found links to first year lectures and meds, etc. Not sure how much help that will be but hey, at this point, I'll take anything! A review of the basics won't hurt.

Can you recommend a good med-surg book, a pharm book and anything else you think is appropriate? I am a little concerned about the meds that have been approved since I last worked.

I've reviewed ACLS, some surprizing changes there! While you're advising me - would you care to recommend a unit or discipline? I'm not too eager to work in ER again even though at one time I wouldn't have worked anywhere else.

Thank you so much for your time.

Yes it's dry CathyRN06. No dumbing down. Very "medical" in nature, but that does not hinder flow, if you know what I mean. No silly nursing stuff at all IMHO (if you know what I mean).

Check out your local bookstore or library to see if there is one in stock and go take a peek.

Are there any sites that you use to research medical literature to stay prepared?

Medscape, Medpage if you are interested in gettng stuff to read when you have time. You can join a prof organization if you want. But some of that stuff is not worth much IMHO... I'd go to a college library and look at a few journals first online to see if they do anything you are interested in, before you pay any dues.

I've used Medscape for my CEU's for years, a very good site - thanks. I just want something that will increase my confidence and make me feel competent. Right now there are holes in my memory but I'm good at independent study.

Thanks so much everyone for all your ideas. It's been very helpful and I'll let you know how the big job hunt goes!

Again, much gratitude!
