Need to interview a Nurse for a short assignment

Nursing Students Student Assist

Published

Hi, this is my first semester in the nursing program. I was assigned a paper on interviewing a current working Nurse on the topic of an ethical problem encountered in patient care and how it was resolved. I wanted to know if a currently working Nurse could please tell me an incident where they had an ethical problem in regards to patient care. It could either be where you were primarily involved or you witness it and it went against your values. Examples are like a patient wanting to die, doing something against the patients wishes, breaking confidentiality, doctor/nurse being incompetent (under the influence) while working, someone doing a procedure wrong (like catheters becoming unsterile) and not reporting it, etc.

I would really appreciate it if someone helped out, thank you.

Specializes in Pediatrics.

Had a patient in a SNF in her 90s she had a trach and g-tube, non verbal non responsive would only cry when care was provided, had major decubs on saccral area and knees from when her family tired to care for her at home.

She was a full code

One day she coded, as much as the staff (me) hated to do it I started compressions on her, possibly breaking every rib she had as she was only 70lbs. We did CPR for 15 min untill paramedics arrived and took over, and we got a pulse back, went to the hospital where she stayed for a few weeks untill returning to my facility, where she then had no response to pain at all, her pupils were reactive but no other reactions would no longer cry no response to pain, just a shell and the family still insisted that grandma be a full code.

Infact they wanted her to be on a cardiac monitor incase she coded again and we didn't find her intime.

Now dear student what would you do?

Social work and MDs have heavily documented that they have disscussed end of life issues with the family, quality vs quanity, but she remains a full code, they except mom/grandma to live forever.

I did not go into nursing to beat up on elderly grandmas, which was what I felt like I was doing when I started CPR on her, but the family had been informed, it was their decision to keep her a full code.

Thank you so much for the reply. I really appreciate it. May i ask for your full name and which hospital your from please? I need to cite my sources for this assignment.
