need idea for teaching goal

Nursing Students Student Assist

Hi, my patient tomorrow is a 23-month old who came into the hospital for a shunt revision to treat hydrocephalus secondary to a neonatal meningitis infection. I have an educated mom who has been dealing with this issue for nearly two years - I need to teach her SOMETHING but I'm sure she knows much more than I do about what is going on with her daughter (who was adopted from Africa at 6 weeks old). Any ideas?

Read and understand about your patients main concern. Then for teaching you should always find out from the patient or in this case the mother, what they already know about the medical condition so you are not trying to reteach them what they already know. Maybe ask the mother if she has any questions. If you don't know the answer to her question then maybe you can find out the answer and that would be a teaching moment. If your clinical instructor does not welcome questions then be prepared to find the answer on your own.
