Just took my first test in my ADN mental health nursing class and bombed it. I am like sooo upset because i have never failed a nursing test (second year student). I just cant seem to grasp the info because it just so much different from a typical med-surg course. Someome, anyone, please give me some advice on studying/ understanding psych...

Psych Nursing is all about communication! Never ask a patient "what or why" they feel something. You need to have an understanding of the different personality disorders, so that you know how to respond to each type of person.

My advice--if you can, do practice questions! I had a hard time with psych too. I did good in the class, but I got really stressed out on the tests because I was never SURE which answer was right.

Someone told me before I started Mental Health that whatever you think is the right answer, pick something else.

While this wasn't always the case, there were times that it seemed that way. When reading the questions, be sure to look for closed ended questions. Those are almost always wrong. In MH it is all about "Tell me more..." and feelings and "how".

Also! You need to know your own attitudes before going into a situation. I got this question a few times. When reading the questions, try not to add more information, take it as it is asked. Sometimes it is easier to eliminate answers rather than looking for the right one.

This is exactly how i feel, i usually do good on the practice questions but seems as tho the actual exam is alot different. Im just having a hard time focusing/ grasping the info. Im gonna request some 1:1 interaction with my instructor before the next test to help understand the concept of choosing the 'most right' answer...
