D5NS ("5% Dextrose in Normal Saline") is a hypertonic solution. It takes fluid from the cell and shifts it into the intravascular space.
Other hypertonic solutions would be: D5.45 NS (5% Dextrose and 1/2 Normal Saline), D5RL (5% Dextrose and Ringers Lactate)
Isotonic solutions: are NS (Normal Saline) or RL (Ringers Lactate or also called Lactated Ringers). intravascular hydration
Hypotonic solutions: .45 NS (1/2 Normal Saline), .33% Saline, 2.5% Dextrose and D5W (5% Dextrose in water BUT it is isotonic in the bag only , once it enters the body it becomes free water). Hypotonic solutions hydrates the cell.

d5w / ns is shorthand for 5% dextrose in normal saline. the following is a chart of commonly used iv solutions and contains what is in them. you can download and print the chart out for your own use:

what is the meaning of the remaining letters and their concentration plz ?
