The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) recognizes the National Certified School Nurse (NCSN) credential (RN-BC). This certification is specifically for registered nurses (RNs) who work in school settings and demonstrates that the nurse has met the education, experience, and knowledge required to provide effective school health services.

Since you are saying "CSN" and not "NCSN," the certification does not sound like the ANCC-recognized one. Are you currently a school nurse? Without more information, I have to admit I'm a bit confused. Suppose the program you will attend offers a school nurse certificate recognized by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. Will this benefit you as a school nurse in New Jersey?

I don't understand why your license would matter unless you must fulfill clinical hours in PA. Sometimes, there's a concern about being awarded continuing education units, but that's not what I hear you asking. I apologize for not being able to be more helpful.

However, here's what you can do:

  • Verify program requirements. Double-check the specific licensure requirements of the program. While they may have told you that a NJ-licensed nurse can participate, confirm this in writing and ensure that no state-specific licensure issues could impact your ability to complete the program.
  • Check PA licensing requirements. Even though it's an online program, some states require that nurses maintain a valid license in the state where the school is based. You should verify whether PA has any special requirements for out-of-state nurses who are enrolled in PA-based programs, particularly for clinical placements or other hands-on elements.
  • Confirm clinical requirements. Many online nursing programs, even entirely virtual ones, still require clinical hours to be completed in person. Since you're licensed in NJ, you'll want to ensure that your clinical hours can be done in NJ (or another state) and that the program is okay with this.
  • Check with the State Board of Nursing. Since this is a licensure-related matter, it might be wise to contact both NJ and PA's nursing boards to confirm there are no issues with you participating in an out-of-state program. They may also clarify if you need to apply for a PA license for the duration of the program or if your NJ license will suffice.
  • Communication with the program. Reach out to the program coordinator to clarify any doubts. They should be able to provide clear guidance on the inter-state licensing issues and confirm your eligibility to participate without needing to apply for a PA license.

Hopefully, some school nurses from our wonderful school nurse forum can offer advice.

Best wishes,

Part of PA  regulations School Nurse Certification programs require a minimum of 100 hour practicum: 50 hrs elementary and 50 hours middle-high school students.  See if the college has established affiliations in your area. If no, inquire of NJ school districts in your area if they could be a clinical site for you and confirm they have certified school nurse on staff willing to precept.  Some school districts jump at this chance since so few RN's have this credential --future potential employee!

With a little legwork on your part and some paperwork, could lead to a rewarding career change.  Allnurses School Nursing forum members offer help to those seeking this credential so drop in there.
