need help with samuel merritt ABSN writing sample

U.S.A. California

Is there anyone who can help me with how to write the writing sample?...I know what I want to say, but am unsure of the style to write it. Should I try to stand out, and open with a 'grabbing' intro, or should the paper be more formal and just professionally discuss my motivation and preparation? What are they looking for I guess is what I'm after. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Lucky for you (and very lucky for me).....I got into the ABSN program at Samuel Merritt for this fall!!! Somehow I feel that my personal statement may help you. It was staright from the heart and was straight to the point as to my experiences leading me to want to join the nursing field. Send me a personal message and I can talk to you more about this.

I almost feel as though you might have attended or attend UC Davis by your name (davisgirl9)...I just graduated from there last summer 06'. Talk to you later.!!!

Elena 33,

Im getting ready to apply to samuel merritt this fall. Im having a hard time on the writing sample...any advice?

Well, what I did was write a little story as my intro. I had noticed that I was interested in helping others when I would go visit my family in Peru every other year. Back there no one really has the money to be going to the doctors for help and therefore walk to a local pharmacy (that is in garages) and tell the Pharmacist their symptoms and then they sell them a drug. Basically, it was moments like these that made me want to become a nurse to help others in areas that are disadvantaged. This story that I discussed, along with volunteer work, personal characteristics and classes, made a good personal statement. Make sure it's personal and truthful and I feel that they sense that. They want a real person to be a nurse not some overachiever that lists all their volunteer work. This is your chance to show them that you're caring, and motivated to begin an accelerated program. Also discuss WHY with them and not any other school.

I applied and was accepted into SM's ELMSN program. A good program, but I've chosen to go elsewhere.

I wrote about my personal and professional life experiences leading up to my pursuing a second career in nursing; I did this in essay format. However, I did it in a very dense, straightforward and professional writing style--no attempt to be cute or funny. My life is story is a complex. I basically showed how I was road tested to survive the challenges of nursing school to become the nurse I am meant to be. My young friend did the opposite and wrote an essay that was as cute and funny as she is in real life, and she also was accepted. I think the people at SM are looking for truth and the ability to write your truth effectively. That and the ability to follow instruction...although I wrote over the page they requested. Note, I purposely gave myself only a weekend to write it because I write better this way and knew that I wouldn't futz around with it and ruin it and waste a lot of valuable time futzing with it. My friend spent months fine-tuning hers. If you read hers, it would seem as though she had just written it off the top of her mind vs. mine that seemed much more involved.

Find your voice and capture that and then say what has been brewing around in your head these past few weeks. Then organize it and start writing---then proofread, proofread, proofread. Then let someone you trust read it again.

Good Luck

Thanks for all the advice....I now have a better idea......Good Luck with school

I am in the ABSN and it is not very hard to get into period. I would stress out about it too badly...
