Need help regarding Varicella Titer

U.S.A. Michigan

Published

Good afternoon,

I must obtain a titer proving that I had varicella/chicken pox as a child. This is required of the OCC nursing program. I do not have health insurance and all labs charge $100+ for this test!!!! Can anyone suggest where I can get this done for low cost or even free? The health dept. does not do this.

Thank you!

I went to my doctor, my health insurance covered the labs. As far as I know, no one in my class was able to find anywhere low cost/free to do the titers. I know one girl paid almost $500, but we had to have several labs done.

i got tested at my univeristy (theres a health fee thats included in tutition) and it costed me about $27. My test came back negative even though my mom swore i did have chicken pox. Now I need the shots and they're $100 bucks...and you need two of them (a month apart). Thank lord my insurance covered them so i only paid the copay...you can try a heath clinic in your area...if they have the shots, they prob. charge you cheap....

It cost me $130 because my insurence doesnt cover this test. So even with insurence it wasnt covered. :C However I was billed which makes it a bit easier. My hep. B shot wasnt covered by my insurence either...and I wasnt aware but they are 88 per shot from my doctors! I am checking with the health department for the last one I need before I do that again. I dont know what my results were though as I havent went back to ask my doctor lol but I know for a fact I had Chicken pox in 1st grade.

The hep B shots are about $35 each at the macomb county health dept. if you want to check there. Much cheaper than going through your Dr. My insurance didn't cover these either.

Thanks I live in Wayne county and am close to monroe county and work near washtanaw county sooo I know I will find one. Its good to know it is only $35. though! Much better then $88.00 plus the potential $15 co pay for doctor visits (sometimes they do not charge this as it isnt really a doctor visit for an injection).

my insurance wouldn't cover it since i am over 18 unless i was "in danger of getting it". once i told them that i was starting nursing school soon, they agreed that I will be in an environment where i would be expose to it. since i'm getting my shots in july, school would have already started for me by the next time i get it (since they need to be a month apart). i'm pretty sure you have a student health clinic at school and they are extremely cheaper (10 bucks or so)

Thank you all so much for your help! I was able to get my blood drawn from the Detroit Bio Lab in Farmington Hills for $52 to have the Varicella titer done. The lab work takes 6 days.

In addition, I received all three Hep-b vaccinations through the Oakland Co. Health dept. for $75.

Good luck, all and God Bless!

Jill
