What population do you want to know about? ESRD patients aged 40-60 receiving hemodialysis.
What nursing intervention would you like to perform? Patient teaching on dietary changes to keep fluid gain to a minimum or dietary changes to avoid large fluctuations in electrolyte levels.
Compared to patients that do not adhere to a strict diet.
Observations?
Then put it in the form of a question.
Do ESRD patients who have been taught about dietary changes...have less fluid gain between dialysis than patients who do not ...
Something like that, it's late and I am getting sleepy. I hope some part of that helps you.

To formulate questions in Evidence Based Practice and use the PICOT format.
QuotePICOT stands for:Population/ Patient Problem: Who is your patient? (Disease or Health status, age, race, sex)Intervention: What do you plan to do for the patient? (Specific tests, therapies, medications)Comparison: What is the alternative to your plan? (ie. No treatment, different type of treatment, etc.)Outcome: What outcome do you seek? (Less symptoms, no symptoms, full health, etc.)Time: What is the time frame? (This element is not always included.)Your PICOT question should fall under one of these types:Therapy/PreventionDiagnosisEtiologyPrognosis
Your PICOT question should fall under one of these types:
That's so funny, I wrote observation instead of outcome.
Hope you got your assignment completed.

So I know this post is old, but I can't help myself. I am searching AllNurses for ideas for a med/surg PICO question and come across this thread. I read through the responses and find that Esme has left a link to Lansing Community College - where I am enrolled in the Nursing Program. I am tickled pink lol
