Specializes in Float Pool - A Little Bit of Everything.

Hi Fellow Nurses,

I am having a great deal of trouble deciding between two jobs and I wanted to see what you might do and why. To make a long story short I have been on a bit of a hospital hiatus for 1.5 years in a SNF. The setting is not something I desire to do long term and based on my future ambitions and goals, going back to the hospital setting is for me. I want a good paying job in good environment, and just to note I am a PRN Float Pool RN. I am not ready to go back to full time, enjoying being a mama right now.

My manager at my last job is welcoming me back and another local hospital has given me a prospect for a new job and facility. I wrote down the Pro's and Con's so I will list them below. Hospital A is the hospital I worked at before and Hospital B would be the new one. Any feedback would be much appreciated.

Hospital A:

Pros-

  • 20 minute drive
  • Base Pay significantly higher.... $6 before weekend and shift comps
  • Regional presence, large corporation
  • Promise of no ER orientation (No longer want to do ER, this was part of the reason I went on hiatus)
  • 48 hr a month minimum
  • Have scrubs already
  • EMR is my favorite from all facilities
  • Root Cause Analysis (I am a fan, note my MSN concentrates in healthcare policy)
  • Lots of available shifts

Cons-

  • Nights mostly needed right now
  • Float all over hospital, no real home bases.
  • Don't feel like I truly fit in all the time
  • Critically low staffing & high turnover, lots of managers left
  • No monitor techs in any department, Hx of Sentinel events
  • Many unhappy former colleagues
  • Low nurse say, nursing advocacy, or presence in policy happenings
  • Pretty chaotic & stressful compared to other facilities
  • Not the best community reputation
  • Kind of dingy looking

Hospital B:

Pros-

  • Can work mostly days, which means almost no traffic in a congested area
  • I feel like I fit in well with staff, I personally know some and I have shadowed with them.
  • I like the managers and leaders
  • One floor PRN in my preference Med/Surg/Tele
  • Local, private facility
  • No ER floating
  • Better staffing situations, though this is always fluid
  • Lots of committees and shared governance involvement in hospital
  • Monitor techs!!!
  • Great recommendations from current and past employees
  • Starbucks! Holler!!! Haha
  • Nice looking, renovated facility
  • Appears to be more nurse involvement in operations of facility as a whole
  • Root Cause Analysis- Staff HIGHLY involved, the floor nurses were doing one when I was there
  • Discount at my college

Cons-

  • 40 minute commute over a bridge that often has accidents and traffic (Traffic not a problem if I work days, so much & no toll)
  • Base pay is the lowest I have had in about 3.5 years before comps
  • Private, so possible buyout looms in future for sustainability
  • 1 shift required per week, so still 48 hours but required to work 1 shift every week. With their pay periods however, this would mean every other weekend (I can only work weekends).
  • Need to buy new scrubs
  • EMR is like comparing Facebook to Oregon Trail, ancient.
