Need help about obtaining a license in CA.

Published

Hello guys, i just need some answers on how can i obtain a CA nurse license.

I finished my Nursing course in the Philippines last 2012, and afterward i took up the local board there. I received my license as a Philippine nurse at the same year. Then afterward, me and my sister went back here in the USA to apply for a CA licensure examination.Me and sister then applied for the NCLEX examination and forwarded our request for it, but then we were adviced by some of my sister's friends that taking up the CA NCLEX is too complicated and we had to take another year of nursing course before we can get the examination.

My question is do we really need to take another year to study nursing here in the USA?

or would if be better if we cancel our application and apply to another state and take the NCLEX there and just use the endorsement method (reciprocity) after we pass so that we can practice here in California?

Thanks guys!! very much appreciated

Moved to Nurse Registration forum in World Nursing. There are numerous threads in this forum that discuss the current challenges of internationally educated nurses attempting to gain licensure as a nurse in CA.

I take that both you and your sister already have a valid SSN, if so, then that's a good step in the right direction.

However, do you feel that ALL your courses were done concurrently (both clinical and theory's section happened in the same months, not years apart)? Do you know of other batchmates that successfully got their ATT's recently in CA? As you can read in the many threads, only but a handful of PH applicants have been given the ATT go-ahead.

If there's any chance that your courses will not meet the CA BON minimum requirements, then any out-of-state license is no guarantee to be granted (endorse or transfer) to be accepted back into CA, as they will ALWAYS request your original college transcripts and must meet the minimum standards. Endorsement (transfer) is not going to happen to many PH students/nurses with the concurrency rules.

Just be prepared to work, practice, buy your house and watch your babies grow into teenagers and young adults in another State other than CA and several of the state's enforcing the concurrency rules. That's the way it will be for many years to come as I don't see the CA BRN changing their 25 plus old concurrency rules and with the high unemployment rate of even CA own new grads and experienced nurses, it's the new reality.

Yes, it could take another year or two of extra studies in CA but that's AFTER waiting another previous 1-3 years to get enrolled into any of the heavily impacted CA colleges just for foreign student to try to take up the deficient courses. Others have mentioned a few of the CA schools are already with a 3 year "waiting list".

Yup, me and my sister have our valid SSN. More or less, im sure ive finished both my theoreticals and clinical cases at the same time. One thing i am thinking also is about the clinical cases for in the Phikippines we are now only required to pass 3 (previously it was 5) cases each for the said fields of clinical practices. im wondering if it is sufficient enough for the CA BRN's requirement. Im also concerned about the breakdowns of my course, wether it will meet the CA BRN course standard or not specialy the obstetric and geriatric section ( which some said that it was the most common problem in the course breakdown). One of my sister's friend (a year ahead on her batch) said that she tried to apply here in CA for the NCLEX but then she decide to take it on another state for the course didnt match the standard(she took the state of illinois). But then im still hoping my case will be different coz me and my sister's schools are different and as far as i know im the only one in our batch to apply for the CA NCLEX.

Thanks for all the information you've shared, it helps me alot to understand more about the process. Godbless to you...
