need help negotiating

I've been traveling for a year now and basically have just kept resigning my contract. I work in cicu but get floated constantly. I just put up with it cause husband is in last year of school here in Michigan. My contract is over in April and they have agreed to resign but only as a telemetry float nurse. I wouldn't mind this position as he only has 4 months left of school. However, I would want more pay and they are desperately short on the floor. I only make 29.00 $ an hour now. Can anyone give me some advice or tips on how to better negotiate or be more assertive? Any help from you seasoned travelors would be great.

I just used to say I need this pay to do the job. I specified if I would float or not and what floors I would float to. What area of the country are you working in?

Thanks, I like that line. Working in Michigan, really great people, just floated out quite a bit, prior to this worked 8 years in icu in Delaware. Just really need to be more assertive, if thats the right word I'm looking for or need to look into other companies.

Well, just got off the phone with recruiter and she said the rate was not negotiable, so it looks like I'm back to square one. Not too worried, how many occupations can you say that about. LOL

luvtheh20rn ..If I may...I will tell you how when I was in a similar situation got more pay. I was sent to the assignment by one agency, and the assignment was for two weeks at first...and wasn't a travel assignment. I was already in the area...and took the assignment because it interested me. But the unit liked me, and offered me to stay on for another month. I did...but during that time, I was being offered travel assignments that would have paid more. But I liked where I was...so I approached my agency for more money and to make it a travel assignment, which would have paid my housing also. The agency refused to even approached the hospital to change the assignment to a travel one...or to try and get me more money.

Then the hospital expressed the desire to have me do three more months. Since I liked the unit I was in..I decided that I wanted to extend..but I didn't want to continue losing money on the deal. So I approached the NM and told her...that this was a business decision...and I couldn't continue on contract without it being a travel assignment. And that since the agency I was with...didn't want to negotiate..I didn't see where I could accept an extension with them.

To make a long story short...I ended up getting the hospital to make the assignment a travel one...and to accept me thru another agency. I got more money and I got my housing paid. Not sure if this something you can do where you are. But if it is...it's worth a try. Good Luck!

Wow, that's pretty impressive, definately food for thought. I,m glad I stumbled on this board. I love travel nursing, nice break from office politics if you know what I mean. Are there agencies out there that reimburse for bcls and acls, just curious, never had to pay for it before but it looks like I will this time. Thanks for the info.. just might work.
