Need help finding 1st job in Albuquerque, NM!!!

Published

Hi All!!! I recently graduated and passed my NCLEX Oct. 30, 2012. I have applied for at least 20 jobs that required less than 1 year experience. So far....NOT one interview or call back. I have applied at local hospitals and even the local youth detention center that even offers a 10% incentive for having your license. I am discouraged and financially drained. Should I apply as a Nurse Tech just to get my foot in the door, or would I be OVER QUALIFIED?? My resume is good with strong work history, (my only break was during Nursing School). I am also a member of Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society, and had an excellent GPA. I really don't know what to do. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks a bunch!!!

Hi! Yes the new grad market is tough. I am sorry you are going through this. They will probably not hire as a tech as your licensure is above that and you can be held liable to the level of responsibility of the RN. Check craiglist, the newspapers etc...there are sometimes clinic stuff or free standing places like urgent care or ambulatory surgery which might hire you. I know when I did a travel contract there in 2010 at the heart hosp, they were having a hard time keeping staff and hiring all the time. But I do not know what it is like now.

good luck to you.

Thank you!! I will keep looking and checking every source I can. It seems like everyone who I graduated with, that got jobs right away were already techs who moved to an RN position, or knew somebody who helped them get their job. I really don't have connections and did not work as a tech first. I will keep my fingers crossed and keep on applying. Thanks for the response!! =)

Hi, I am a ADN student at UNM- Valencia and this is exactly the situation that I am worried about.

Since moving here, I have applied to over 30 Respiratory Therapist positions and 10 Tech positions. Nada.

There are techs in my nursing class that had ZERO experience prior to be hired as techs. I can't even obtain a tech position even though I have 6 years critical care experience as a RT, along with employment as an EMT and a medic in the Army.

The job market here is clearly not fair, along with being tough- I even have some limited connections with friends that are charge RNs.

Best of luck to you... I anticipate leaving ABQ once I graduate and moving back to NY.

Wow!!! I did not know it was that hard for RT's to find a job too, and a veteran too?? Unbelievable!! Sadly, I really have no connections. So far with at least 50-60 apps, ( I have lost count) I had one interview before Christmas at a corrections facility, so far I have not heard back. Its really tough and discouraging. At this point, I am giving it one more week, then I will seek employment outside of nursing. I have bills to pay!!!! I really wish you the best!!! Good Luck!!!
