Hi everyone:Im a 4th year student (school just started yesterday) and my focus is maternity. We are going to present a seminar soon and here are the lists of topics to choose. The one im interested in is perinatal loss and grief but during break i went to microwave my food and another girl took this topic. Later i communicated with her and asked her in a nice way how much is she interested in this topic? she told me to pick another topic and this is topic is boring, i said it is not boring because i can do it in different cultures(how different countries deal with baby loss) and she kept silent. Im like.........."i just sold my idea for free eh?" later she wrote me saying she is not giving up the topic and i have to choose another one and "im sure teacher will help you finding another one"I am angry, anywayhere are the topics preterm labour and implications for the infantmanagement of twin and multiple pregancies/infants implicationspost date pregnancies and implications for the infantgroup b strep during the perinatal period: antenatal, intrapartum, and postpartumhiv in the perinatal periodmood disorders in the perinatal periodsubstance abuse in the perinatal period with infant implicationsperinatal loss and griefobstetric emergencieshypertensive disorders of pregnancy/HELLP Syndromegestational diabetes/Diabetes in Prenancy and effect on the NewbornPreterm Birth and Developmental IssuesGenetic Disorders e.g. down syndrome, trisomy 13, 18, cystic fibrosis, prader willi syndromecongenital heart defectsDKA in the child or adolescentrepiratory assessment and illness in the paediatric patientpaediatric head injuryfluid and electrolyte imbalance in the paediatric patientthese are the topics, however i feel all of them are factoral and boring and the presentation will be 50 minutes long and ppl will fall into sleepexcept the grief and loss, it will be interestingwe can aslo use other topics if we can think of i cant think of any right top on my mindso i need help, suggestions, and evenif anyone can help me making these boring topics interesting in my presentation that will be greatexpecially experienced nurses' ideas are welcomed!millions thanks!

Sep 9, 2009 My experience with presentations is that for a 50min one the students will fall asleep anyways so pick a topic you can do a good presentation on and get a good grade. I would not worry myself with that girl

Sep 9, 2009 well, I'm a bit prejudiced because I had PIH/HELLP twice...but I think it is a fascinating topic, even though I have NO interest in maternity/OB nursing. This is a great website. http://www.preeclampsia.org/good luck with whatever you choose.

Sep 9, 2009 -Congenital Heart Defects (you could also incorporate grief and loss into this topic) Check out the book "Walk on Water: The Miracle of Saving Children's Lives" by Michael Ruhlman about the pediatric congenital heart defect unit (stories of the surgeons, nurses, patients, and families) at the Cleveland Clinic.-It isn't listed, but also what about the Home vs. Hospital Birth controversy?Happy researching!

(You can also incorporate different cultures like you were going to do with grief and loss) I don't have any books off the top of my head for that one, but there are a bunch of threads here on allnurses.com about recent news articles about the controversy. here's a link to one of the news stories: http://au.news.yahoo.com/a/-/latest/5948265/pro-homebirth-rally-held-in-canberra/

Don't get too caught up in the competitiveness, though.. It's important to keep in mind that you and all your classmates will very shortly (since you're in your 4th year!) be colleagues in a professional setting. Be as compassionate with your classmates as I'm sure you are with your patients. :)(and congrats on being almost done with nursing school!)
