hi

i need a little help with an assignment. i guess i'm not clear about what is wanted. i actually already completed the assignment with the direction of an instuctor but i think i did it incorrectly. below is the assignment as written in our assignment guide.

research insulin dependent diabetes. your clinical instructor will distribute one of the following aspects of diabetes to present to the clinical group.

1.disease process

2.objective and subjective signs

3.etc, etc

*i was given primary prevention to research

prepare a poster sized educational tool to teach about this aspect of diabetes.

i asked an instructor what was meant by primary prevention since there is no prevention of type 1 (insulin dependent) diabetes. she said i should focus on prevention of complications then.

then with type 2 the focus is on actual prevention of the disease (diet, exercise, weight management).

now since gestational is usually not prevented, she said again, the primary prevention focus becomes in preventing complications.

so..thats what i did. i briefly discussed my poster and project with another instructor who said what i did for type 1 and gestational was actually secondary prevention, which another student will be presenting. ack!:uhoh21:

i have already submitted my poster and will be doing my presentation tuesday. i'm just confused now. any help??

i have always put a lot of time and effort into my work but i feel like a goof with this one!

thanks so much for reading. any help will be very much appreciated.

you need to do your own homework, sweetie.

I appreciate you taking the time to read my post, Rubie. However, I believe you have misunderstood. I certainly am NOT asking anyone to DO my homework as your response implies. Your response has also made me feel foolish for asking for help on this forum.

will you have to do an oral presentation with the poster? if so, then you can clarify that you were attempting to incorporate different types of diabetes, not just focus on type 2. you already handed it in though...how can we help? did you have primary prevention of type 2 on the poster as well? if so it sounds like you are fine and just need a little reassurance.

Thank you so much for your reply!

Yes, I will be doing an oral presentation along with the poster. I

am going to revise the material for my oral presentation (and make a new poster if time allows). I was asking for guidance here because I was confused and unsure about how to do that. The instructors I spoke with gave different advice and the research I did wasn't clearing it up for me.

I guess I made what was a simple assignment into something more difficult. Now I understand all that was wanted was simply a presentation of the primary prevention of type 2 diabetes.

Again, thank you for your help.:thankya:

since the instructor said you should focus on preventing the complications of insulin dependent diabetes you need to first make a list of what those are. there are complications of diabetes:

  • ketoacidosis
  • cardiovascular disease
  • peripheral vascular disease
  • retinopathy and blindness
  • nephropathy and renal failure
    • gastroparesis
    • diarrhea
    • impotence
    • postural hypotension

    [*]dermopathy

    [*]resistance to infection

    [*]depression

but, i'm wondering if you should specifically be focusing on the complications of injecting insulin (yes, there are some of those!):

  • symptoms of hypoglycemia (due to too much insulin or not eating enough after receiving the dose of insulin)
    • headache
    • tremors/nervousness
    • fatigue
    • weakness
    • slurred speech
    • dizziness
    • pallor
    • irritability
    • cold, clammy feeling, cold sweat
    • tingling of the lips
    • confusion and disorientation
    • severe: coma

[*]symptoms of hyperglycemia (not enough insulin)

    • increased thirst
    • increased hunger
    • increased or frequent urination
    • blurred vision
    • nausea
    • drowsiness

[*]difficulty drawing up insulin if the patient has visual problems or blindness or difficulty feeling and using the fingers as a result of diabetic neuropathy (this is one of the reasons insulin pens have become popular)

[*]i think this is the major complication your instructor will be looking for: insulin lipodystrophy - changes in the subcutaneous fat at the site of injection. occurs when injection sites are not rotated.

these are just my thoughts on this after reading your post. there is so much information on the internet about diabetes. here are some great sites you might want to check out:

i have to tell you that my cat is an insulin dependent diabetic. ocassionally, i forget to give her a dose (she gets 3 units of nph q12h) and i can tell. she will be hugging the water bowl (polydipsia) and peeing up a storm (polyuria). some time ago i posted this old poem about a diabetic dog that my uncle used to tell in the days before cable tv when he and others sat around drinking beer in the evening. my uncle trained hunting dogs. little did i know that i was being educated as well as entertained! maybe you or one of your classmates might find it useful for your presentation: https://allnurses.com/forums/f50/advice-please-198453.html

There is one other thing you may want to consider. Were you told to research insulin dependent diabetes or Type 1 (juvenile) diabetes? I am Type 2 diabetic, but I am insulin dependent. And this is not at all uncommon. Type 1 and Type 2 are definitely different disorders, but both can be insulin dependent and Type 2 definitely has preventitive strategies. Just a thought. :twocents:
