Need an emotional support dog

Nurses Disabilities

Published

Hello!

my husband is a firefighter. I am in nursing school. I get anxiety when he is gone (he is gone quite a bit ) and I can't sleep. It's really wearing me down.

L.s.s. I'm getting a dog but would like to make it an emotional support dog. If course, this dog would not actually go to work with me or to school with me . It would go lots of other places though.

Question:::

when applying for a job, can anyone look up medical info and discriminate against me for having an emotional support dog ?

If I didn't tell the hospital I applied at, would there be any way for them to find out prior to hiring me ?

I can't do this editing thing well on my phone but I do see you want a pet, not a service animal that goes with you all the times you're out. If you're going to be sad or angry or anxious there's a good chance your critter won't be there because work and school take up 90% of your time in nursing school. You can't rely on emotional support critters if all the times you're stressed, you aren't home with said animal. My bad, OP, I missed that snippet. Good luck!

I would first address your mental health with a licensed professional.

Pets are a big responsibility and a life time commitment. There is a huge financial and time investment involved with pet ownership.

If you are looking for companionship around the house and you can meet the commitments of dog ownership, I suggest adopting a dog breed that is suitable for your household size and temperament preferences.

Service dogs are a whole other story and the credentialing involved is serious.

Good luck with everything!

I just posted an article about service dogs. It may be helpful to you.
