Need some advice

Okay, so I will graduate in May with my associates degree.:nurse: I was offered a position on the floor that I am an intern on. I love the job and most of the people seem nice and willing to help. The problem is it's an hour and a half away. I work there now with no problem because I pretty much work what I want so the commute doesn't seem that bad but when I work 12 hrs all I have time to do is go to work and sleep. I have 2 kids by the way.

But this is nights so maybe I'll have time to see them in the afternoon before I go to work. I'm so scared that if I don't take it I won't find anything else with the way the economy is. I have applied to 3 other hospitals and the positions that I wanted have all been filled.

So would you take it or wait on a job that's closer to home.

Thanks in advance for any responses.

that's kind of a tough one. i've been hearing that it's been increasingly harder for new grads to get hired....not only because of the economy but because people are stressing "experience" when hiring new nurses. in all honesty, to LOVE the people and place that work comes above all else for me. if you already LOVE what you're doing and are having trouble finding something else, i would stick with it and try it out. BUT....keep your options open and continue to apply to other places just in case it doesn't. do you live alone or have child care issues? if so, that makes it more tough. i was going to suggest trying to clump your days of work all in one and staying somewhere local, like with a coworker or something. you also gotta consider gas expenses!

Thank you, no I don't live alone and my oldest son is in school and the youngest will hopefully be starting head start in September. Right now he goes to day care. So I'm good on child care. I'm just worried about not having enough time with them:cry:. And yeah the gas prices, right now it's okay. I have drove back and forth when gas was above 3 dollars ( I go to school in this town also) and that was ridiculous, like 400-450 a month on gas.Hope it doesn't get that bad again.

But overall I guess I'm leaning more towards taking it.

For me, definitely with the economy right now I would take the position, then stay there for a good year and see if I can switch someplace closer after that. I have several friends who were in that position, they even switched out after 6 months when they were considered Staff nurse II as opposed to Staff Nurse I. I totally feel for you though I have a 1 year old at home.

I would definitely take the position. Continue to look for something closer or look into moving closer to the job. You are so lucky to have been offered a job as a new grad. Best wishes to make this situation work.

Congrats on making through your program:yeah::yeah:I'd say take the job and do the best you can. Always keep your options open. When I worked in a hospital I was shocked at how many of our staff cycled through. It was taken as a given, and we all wished them well.
