Need advice, new RN.

Published

I have been working as an RN for almost a year now in a very fast paced specialty area. Great job love the floor and staff, the problem is my schedule, I do not mind working PMs or nights but I was told by the HR department when hired that I would get every other weekend off, but once I get to the floor that statement can be completely thrown out the window, since I started I have worked just about every fri, sat, and sunday, unless I use my PTO to request weekends off, my personal life is completely gone, I have spoken with my manager about this issue and it got better for about a month and then went right back to the every weekend thing sometimes I even work 5, 6, 7 days in a row. I have tried to see if I can work day shift so that I can at least have a life and was told it is based on senority thing, yet the newest hire is working some day shifts here and there, I am completely lost, the rules on the floor are not equal and I need some advice on what to do? I need this job and no where else is hiring right now..I do not want to become burnt out but feel it is heading in that direction.

Since you have not made any progress with your manager, take this issue to the HR department. Provide them with objective, factual information including your work schedule. Let them know you will be looking for work elsewhere if the situation is not fixed so that you have the every other weekend schedule you were promised. They don't want to lose you. Never be afraid to stand up for yourself if you are being treated unfairly.
